Sometimes a simple phrase can communicate so much. In the New Testament, writers use this phrase 3 times. Each time it has clarity, focus and hope.
The first time, in the middle of Paul's grand discourse on the resurrection. He describes how Christ's resurrection is the guarantee of ours. 1Cor. 15:23 But each in his own order: Christ, the firstfruits; afterward, at his coming, those who belong to Christ. The next time, the issue is spiritual formation. Paul's reflecting on the wonderful work accomplished in the lives of the Thessalonians. Still yet, the hope of eternal life is present. 1Th. 2:19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of boasting in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? The final time, the apostle John conveys the hope that abides with each believer through all the stages of life. It's an appeal to righteous living. 1John 2:28 So now, little children, remain in him so that when he appears we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming. Not righteous living to gain the hope, but righteous living because of it!
