The words of Jesus in this passage mean so much!
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11: 28-30) What comforting words for a heart this is weary and burdened. Rest. God tells us that He is gentle, humble, and in that we can find rest. To be with God is easy and makes our burdens feel lighter. We sometimes feel quite the opposite. We can’t find God and the burdens keep getting heavier. But here is the key: When we are at rest, God is at rest with us. How many times do you refuse to pick up and carry what a small child has dropped? Have you ever seen a parent take a backpack from a small child’s back, sensing that it was growing heavier and heavier on their tiny shoulders. Then they carelessly and effortlessly toss it on one shoulder and carry on as it if didn’t exist. They smile as the child runs free and unencumbered ahead of them. This scripture is a picture of God being that parent to us. Look at the adjectives, gentle, humble, restful, easy, light. All in sentences describing God. But there is a welcome directive. Come to me. Imagine the hand of God directed to you in a careful, loving, outreach. Take that hand, experience that easy way of walking when you lay those burdens down. When you find rest for your soul, God delights in the rest of His.
