Jesus raised the standard high for believers. The phrase "love your neighbor" is in Scripture
nine times. The first time is actually in Leviticus! I simply didn't know it was there that many times until I did the search. Repetition adds to the value and the priority. Jesus mentioned it many more times than once. I think it's here that we let the Scripture speak for itself. We'll start with the one from Leviticus: Lev. 19:18 Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD. Matt. 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Matt. 19:19 honor your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as yourself. Matt. 22:39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.” Mark 12:33 And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Rom. 13:9 The commandments, Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not covet; and any other commandment, are summed up by this commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself. Gal. 5:14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself. James 2:8 Indeed, if you fulfill the royal law prescribed in the Scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well. It kind of makes me think I ought to love my neighbor.
