When Jesus was on the earth, He made a lot of dramatic claims. He claimed to be God. He said that He would die and rise again. He even told Peter that the disciple would deny Him. The Gospels declare that every claim of Jesus came true. That’s why the writers of the New Testament were so emphatic on the truth of His claim to Divinity and gave the assurance that everyone who called on His name could be saved. He also made a very dramatic statement about everyday life. John 16:33 contains this powerful statement of truth. The first thing He said was that the teaching He gave would give peace. That’s an important commentary from the son of God Himself. The next statement surprises many. Jesus plainly declared: “In this world you will have trouble”. That’s not exciting, but it’s important. Trouble, trial, difficulty, and problems are an anticipated part of every life on earth. You will have trouble. The acknowledgement of this fact is not only realistic, but the essence of what makes His next statement so powerful. After declaring universally that in this world you will have trouble, the son of God gives this grand assurance. “Be of good courage, I have overcome the world”. (John 16:33) Look up! Smile! Be encouraged! Jesus has overcome the world! Praise God!
