He walked with Him for years and saw the amazing things that he had done. He was there when Jesus walked on the water. He observed the shock in the man’s face when he stretched out his withered hand and it was made whole. He had seen the joy in the former leper’s eyes as his flesh was restored instantaneously. He was relieved at the sudden way the winds and the waves went calm upon the command of the Master. He also knew that even though they were miracles, for some reason he just couldn’t cross the line. He had seen other things. He saw how the Pharisees had stomped away from Jesus in disgust upon understanding His claims. Jesus claimed to be God in real time. This declaration required something else. Something He had not done yet. It wasn’t until after the Resurrection, as he records it, while running to the empty tomb with Peter. He watched as Peter ran straight in to see the clothes carefully folded up. John’s own admission was that the “other” disciple, stood outside and believed. His sorrow was turned to joy as it all came together. Jesus had claimed to be God because He is God. This is one reason his gospel is so different from the others. It has one mission. It is committed to one purpose. In the last chapter of his book he states it clearly. John 20:30 says: “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” The mission brings the result. Believing brings life in His name. Praise God!
